Typically a dentist specialist has completed additional education and training beyond dental school. Each one of these specialists play an important role in your dental health and overall well-being.General dentists are primary care oral health providers and are one of the most common types of dentists. You can visit your general dentist for teeth cleanings and routine dental exams. In these exams, a general dentist will evaluate your teeth and gum health as well as conduct treatments such as cavity removal, root canals, and dental crowns. If you have an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or misaligned teeth, you may be referred to an orthodontist for correction. Periodontists help treat and repair diseases and problems of the gums. Overseas-trained dentists working in McDonald’s as millions lack NHS care | Dentists | The Guardian

As a result fully qualified dentists from countries such as India, Egypt and Albania are spending months or even years at a time working in fast food cafes, according to the Association of Dental Groups (ADG). The ADG, which represents major dental providers, demanded an urgent overhaul of the two-part overseas registration examination (ORE) to avoid “an unacceptable waste” of foreign dentists’ skills. Dentists who qualified overseas need to pass both parts of the ORE in order to gain entry to the General Dental Council’s register, which then allows them to work in the UK.There are 6,000 overseas-qualified dentists waiting to take the exams, GDC figures show. But only 600 people can sit the exam, which the GDC usually organises twice a year, though the body has put on extra sittings in recent months to try to tackle the backlog.Shoaib Saiyed, who is also struggling to get a place to do the ORE, said: “I am a fully trained dentist from India with 10 years experience but right now my title is ‘sandwich artist’. I have been making sandwiches at a Subway fast food outlet in Birmingham for over nine months.” · Sayed Bilal Bukhara, another dentist from India, works in a care home and also as a dental hygienist. Our creaking NHS system does a bad job of attracting the dentists who are already working here, with many preferring to practice privately. “But delays in the registration process for foreign recruits are something of an unforced error, stopping us from the kind of sharp expansion we have recently seen in so many other professions.”

How Often Should You Really Go to the Dentist? | TIME

Blumberg is a contributor for TIME. Going to the dentist is essential for preventing and detecting cavities, gum disease, and other oral issues. But few people go enough: According to the latest federal data, only 65% of adults had a dental exam or cleaning in the past year. How often do you really need to visit the dentist?Kemia Zeinali, founder of Dreamhouse Dental in Bell Gardens, Calif. “For example, untreated cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease can lead to serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.” ... Dentists also perform oral cancer screenings for people with risk factors or symptoms, which are “critical to catching such cancers early in their development,” says Dr.Prabha Krishnan, immediate past president of the New York State Dental Association and an attending and chief of periodontics at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. “Good oral health is the gateway for good overall health.” · Previously, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised people to visit their dentist every six months. But the ADA now recommends that the proper cadence for check-ups and professional cleanings should be tailored to each individual's oral health needs, dictated by the patient’s age, health status, and oral health conditions. “While some people may need check-ups every six months, others with higher risk factors for dental disease may need more frequent visits,” says Dr. Natasha M. Flake, president of the American Association of Endodontists. Experts agree that most adults benefit from seeing a dentist at least twice a year for preventive care and early detection of issues like cavities and gum disease.

Owing to the rapid development of three cornerstones of current AI technology—big data (coming through digital devices), computational power, and AI algorithm—in the past two decades, AI applications have started to provide convenience to people's lives. In dentistry, AI has been adopted in all dental disciplines, i.e., operative dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. The majority of the AI applications in dentistry are for diagnosis based on radiographic or optical images, while other tasks are not as applicable as image-based tasks mainly due to the constraints of data availability, data uniformity, and computational power for handling 3D data.Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) is regarded as the gold standard for decision making by dental professionals, while AI machine learning (ML) models learn from human expertise. ML can be seen as another valuable tool to assist dental professionals in multiple stages of clinical cases. This review describes the history and classification of AI, summarizes AI applications in dentistry, discusses the relationship between EBD and ML, and aims to help dental professionals better understand AI as a tool to support their routine work with improved efficiency.

Canadian Dental Care Plan leaves dentists and patients facing uncovered costs

Since the program was introduced in May 2024, The Canadian Dental Association, representing oral health providers across the country, including the 80 per cent of dentistry offices in Ontario that work with the program, have advocated for improvements to the plan. Screenshot of the programs co-payments based on adjusted family net income, as seen on the Canada.ca website. ... People trying to access the program and dentistry professionals say a federal program to cover dental care costs is leaving patients on the hook for part of the fees and that claims are being outright denied without explanation.Winnipeg resident, Olesia Romaniuk, 42, said she was incredibly excited when she found out she was approved for 100 per cent coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan, until she realized that 100 per cent comes with a few strings attached. People trying to access the program and dentistry professionals say a federal program to cover dental care costs is leaving patients on the hook for part of the fees and that claims are being outright denied without explanation. In November 2024, the plan started using pre authorization for certain treatments, said David Brown, president of the Ontario Dental Association, representing dentists across the province. Procedures for crowns, bridges and some specialized treatments require dentist offices to get cases pre-approved, by sending in paperwork “which adds to the burden of the front desk,” said Brown.Meanwhile, Achbar had to pay to have gum surgery in order to make space for the new crown to adhere. Five temporary crowns later, because they are only made to last weeks — on May 4 — 6 months after his dentist’s office put in the first request — the request for coverage from Sun Life Financial was denied.

All three were arrested earlier this month, before being charged this week with operating an illegal business, money laundering, attempted assault, drug dealing and theft. All have pleaded guilty, police said. The president of Czech dental chamber, Roman Šmucler, said that he had an average of 10 fake dentist cases reported a year in the country.A 22-year-old fake dentist and two assistants have been charged by Czech police after treating dozens of patients using instructions found on the internet."The woman, who worked in the health sector, provided anaesthetics but also other dental material to which she had access, such as fillings, cleaning powder, glue, impression material and much more," police said in a statement. "A 22-year-old man posed as a dentist, although he lacked the necessary professional knowledge.""I have two more submissions today, so today there are three cases in the Czech Republic," Šmucler told Czech media outlet Radiožurnál. Which Type of Dentist Should You Choose? | Advantage Dental+

Typically, when going to the dentist, you are seeing a general dentist. General dentists can either be a DDS or a DMD. A DDS dentist has earned their Doctor of Dental Surgery degree; one with a DMD has earned their Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. What is the difference between DDS or DMD? The truth is, they are the same – the difference in title is due to the university they attended and how that university recognizes the profession. Both must complete the same course studies, a written exam, and a licensing exam to practice dentistry. Both of DDS and DMD dentists are considered general dentists and are primary providers who treat overall dental care needs. This includes diagnosing and treating oral health issues such as gum disease, cavities, root canals, crowns, and bridges as well as preventative care.Pediatric Dentist or Pedodontist – Dentists who work exclusively with children. Orthodontist – A patient is referred to an orthodontist when a general dentist notices misalignment with the jaw and/or teeth of both children and adults. If there are extra teeth, missing teeth, or teeth are crowded, an orthodontist will treat the patient with solutions like braces, Invisalign and/or retainers.Their goal is to look at all of the elements related to helping a patient achieve a functional, natural looking smile. Some of the treatment they perform can include dental implants, bridges and dentures. Your general dentist will always be your primary point of contact to help you with your dental care needs.

All My Dentist’s Feedback So Far | The New Yorker

“Wow, good job—I see adult teeth coming in! I’m sorry, honey, the fish-puppet video is gone forever, but we do now have a poster of fish taped to the ceiling. No, fish don’t have to go to the dentist. Emily Menez humorously writes about one’s lifelong journey at the dentist.“Well, that’s something. Your teeth are rotting less, but you’ve gotta floss every night. For how long? Forever. Welcome to the lifelong struggle of dealing with our creator’s sickest joke—putting rotting bones in our eating holes.”“First tooth! Oh, my goodness—you’re turning into a big kid. Time to celebrate your achievement!“Looks like all your baby teeth are in, so let me examine them while you stare at this video of an aquarium full of fish puppets. Yes, fish puppets.
